2017 Annual Report
Summer Cruise Burgee

Buoyed by positive responses to our 2017 cruises, our WHYC Cruise Committee is well along with plans for two more cruises this coming summer. Please take a look at these itineraries, mark your calendars and, if necessary, beg, borrow or steal an appropriate yacht.

In late July, we will head east for several of the best cruising destinations on New England’s south coast, going as far as Martha’s Vineyard, and in late August we will have a “Center Console” Cruise west to Greenport/Dering Harbor and Fishers Island West Harbor.

East Cruise; Sunday July 29th through Sunday August 5th
Sunday, July 29 we will gather in Salt Pond, Block Island, with plans to meet informally for dinner on the lawn at the Oar overlooking New Harbor. On Monday, we move on to Cuttyhunk to repeat our wonderful “shore dinner” (lobster boil) at the Fishing Club, with its magnificent view out over Vineyard Sound and Martha’s Vineyard. This “annual” has become a highlight of recent cruises.

On Tuesday, we will run up Buzzard’s Bay to Padanaram, where we have cocktails and a barbecue dinner planned at the New Bedford Yacht Club in South Dartmouth. From Padanaram we’ll cross through one of the Elizabeth Island “holes” with lunch options in Tarpaulin Cove or Hadley’s Harbor enroute to Vineyard Haven, where inner harbor moorings will be arranged there for two nights on Wednesday and Thursday. The first evening, we will plan cocktails aboard our rafted boats or on the dock and a “catch as catch can” dinner ashore. On Thursday, August 2, we will reprise our last summer cruise dinner at the beautiful Edgartown Yacht Club, an easy bus or cab ride for those who choose to keep their boats in Vineyard Haven.

Starting toward home on Friday, August 3, we will pick up moorings in Sachuest Cove with its beautiful crescent beach and National Wildlife Refuge, where will walk the nature trails and enjoy a BYO beach party. Yachts that choose can tie up or moor in Newport and take a taxi to “Third Beach” to join those who’ve dinghied or swam ashore. On Saturday, some yachts will depart for Maine, but others will meet in Salt Pond, Block Island, for an informal gathering for cocktails on the beach (between the WHYC mooring and Champlins) or rafted with fellow cruisers.

Sunday evening, August 5, we will gather at WHYC for “wash down” and swapping sea stories while we plan to cast off on our “Center Console” cruise.

West Cruise (aka “Center Console Cruise”); Tuesday, August 21st through Thursday, August 23rd
We will gather at Greenport/Dering Harbor with plans to have a cruise dinner at the Shelter Island Yacht Club. SIYC has a well-earned reputation for hospitality, with its large covered deck looking out over their beautiful fleet of Herreshoff 12-1/2’s. On Wednesday, August 22nd we will cruise homeward with a beach stop at Flat Hammock and an overnight stop in West Harbor (Fishers Island) where we plan to have cocktails on the Fishers Island Yacht Club lawn. Dinner ashore will depend on the Pequot’s being in business. Thursday will be a quick run back to Watch Hill.

Please be in touch with any Cruise Committee member with any questions, or you may send an e-mail to WHYCCruisers@gmail.com. Or - click on one of the registration form links above to reserve your spot for one or both of these cruises today!
