W ATCH HILL YACHT CLUB JUNIOR SAILING 2008
Our Program
Juniors and sponsored guests will be enrolled by level of sailing experience.
Beginner
Beginners are introduced to the basics of sailing with an emphasis on fun and safety in our Optimist sailing dinghies. Students will learn the names of the different parts of boats, how to steer, tack, and jibe, and recover from a capsize, and other basic water safety. They will develop a sense of pride and confidence about boat handling, working in teams with their fellow junior sailors.
Intermediate Sailors improve their basic boat handling knowledge. This class requires a student to have a commitment to sailing and be independent with little instructor supervision. Intermediate sailing emphasizes the ability to control an Optimist, or Club 420 in a variety of conditions and situations. Concepts include fine tuning sailing upwind and sailing a triangle course, racing skills such as starts, rounding marks, using the tiller extension, sitting on the rail, basic rules, getting out of irons quickly, C420 spinnaker and trapeze work, and beginner boat maintenance. Racing opportunities are encouraged. Sportsmanship is key.
Advanced This curriculum will introduce strategy for short course racing, advanced and team racing rules, nuances of sail trim, use of weight and positioning for benefit. There will be opportunities for team and individual racing. Attendance at local club and E.C.S.A. events are strongly encouraged as well as participation in area Race weeks and Class Nationals. We recommend that juniors take advantage of participating in Wednesday night Watch Hill-15 races.
Instructors The WHYC staff of instructors are all US Sailing Certified instructor trainers. They have Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification, racing experience and important local water knowledge.
