WHYC Sailing offers many different class options. A brief description of each class is provided below that will help you find the right match for your child.

Taste of Sailing: Wednesdays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Taste of Sailing gives our younger sailors a 'taste' for the world of sailing. Designed for 7-9 year-olds. This is a prerequisite course to Opti I Sailing. Recommended 1-2 years of participation.

OPTI I: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
This beginner program is designed for students ages nine+; 1-4 years of sailing experience; have not participated in regattas. It is recommended that students successfully complete 1-2 years of Taste of Sailing prior to joining the Beginner Class program (or instructor approval).

Opti II: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
After successfully completing the Beginner Opti I program, the next step in the WHYC Jr. Sailing program is this Intermediate Opti Morning Class. Designed for those whom have had 3-5 years of sailing experience (including Taste of Sailing). This class is meant for students who have an interest in learning how to race and/or have participated in regattas.

Opti III and IV Racing: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM
The Intermediate and Advanced Opti Racing Classes are for students who have had five years (minimum) of sailing experience; participated regularly in regattas; exhibited excellence in boat handling. Focus will be on fine tuning boat handling, racing strategy, and handling heavy air sailing. Participating in local ECSA regattas is built into this program.

Beginner 420: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM
This class is designed for students in their first year of 420 sailing. Knowing when to transition from Optis to 420s is always a difficult question to address. WHYC recommends that any student stays in Opti Sailing as long as possible. Ages 14+ (ot upon instructor approval); first year of 420 sailing or have not participated in 420 regattas.

Intermediate 420: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM
1-3 years of 420 sailing experience; have participated in 420 regattas.

Advanced 420 Team Racing: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM
2 years (minimum) of 420 sailing experience; participated regularly in regattas and Team Racing.

Enroll Early: We highly encourage all families to enroll as soon as possible and before the April 15th deadline. Many classes have a tendency to fill up quickly. Once a class has reached capacity, a wait list will be implemented. The Enrollment Form contains a list of all program prices. Please note: Program fees cover instruction, banquets, t-shirts, certificates, and awards. Fees are to be paid prior to the first day of class. Checks are to be made out to the "Watch Hill Yacht Club". Late fees will be applied after May 1st.

Pre-Season Sailing
Preseason Sailing Clinic will be held from Wednesday, June 21st to Wednesday, June 28th
By surprise, Samantha Webster is able to return to Watch Hill for one week this June! We are incredibly happy to announce that she will be able to conduct our Preseason Sailing Clinic for one more season! Samantha is a Sailing Pro and former Transatlantic Winner. She has been coming to Watch Hill for six summers and has greatly enhanced the Junior Sailing Program. We highly recommend that you take advantage of the Preseason this summer!

Our Preseason Sailing Clinic will run the week prior to the start of the WHYC Junior Sailing Program from Wednesday, June 21st to Wednesday, June 28th. The Preseason Sailing Clinic will offer Private Lessons, Group Lessons, and Clinics on weekdays and weekends. This extra time on the water has proven to be an excellent opportunity for sailors of all skill levels and all ages. We highly recommend and encourage private lessons to all of our sailors. One does not need to be in the Junior Sailing Program in order to sign up for private lessons. All ages are welcome!

Lessons are available for the following classifications:

•Adult Sailing

If you would like to have a lesson in a different classification, please let us know.

Who Should Participate?
Lessons are highly recommended for all c420 Sailors as well as opti sailors, who are new to the Advanced Sailing Class or those who wish to further strengthen their sailing knowledge.

Taste of Sailing students and Beginner sailors, likewise, have greatly benefited from having a few private lessons prior to the start of the sailing season, in terms of confidence and boat handling.

The Preseason Sailing Clinic has had the MOST favorable outcome, in terms of better preparing students for a successful sailing season. Further information about reservation opportunities will be sent out mid April. Please note: Lessons fill up VERY quickly!

For questions and/or information, feel free to contact the WHYC Jr. Sailing Program at

We look forward to seeing everyone this summer!
